Gabe

Gabe sighed deeply down the phone. His dad was on the other end of the call, taking in the news about Leo. It was all too much and so unexpected. There was no way his dad would step foot back in Honeydale, so Gabe decided there and then that once he had helped Allie get back on her feet, he’d whisk them all away on a family holiday to spend time together, if she agreed.

His father still wanted to help, so he told Gabe a truck full of plants was on its way for Allie’s front garden.

They ended the call on a positive note, not wanting the past to own either of them, and Gabe went back to tossing his mum’s things into the skip.

The day was still young, so he headed to the local hardware shop in Wishing Well Lane, which was just up the road. He loaded up with paintbrushes, sugar soap, buckets, and paint, then popped in the café to spread the word about the book and craft fayre and grab a coffee before making his way back to Allie’s to get started.

‘Tell Allie not to buy a coffee machine,’ said June, one of the owners. ‘We were about to sell our old one. There’s nothing wrong with it. Rich just wanted this new flashy thing he saw online. I still don’t know how to use it.’

The red-and-chrome coffee machine was added to Gabe’s pickup truck within minutes, with some advice from June on setting up a tearoom.

A couple of delivery men were outside his mum’s house by the time he got back, waiting to take away some furniture, so he helped get that task sorted, feeling pleased the house was losing negative vibes bit by bit. Now he could get back to the barn.

‘I am having a productive day,’ he told the dusty air inside. Opening windows and freshening the small toilet, he started whistling a merry tune.

‘Hello,’ said a man’s voice.

Gabe turned to see a man twice his age standing in the doorway. ‘Jack, right?’

Jack nodded. ‘Yes, you and your partner came to see mine about renting a stall for the fayre.’

Gabe warmed at the thought of being Allie’s partner. He decided not to correct the fella. ‘Yeah, Mae said she wanted one for her children’s books. She said you might want one too. Toys, right?’

‘Wooden toys. The old-fashioned kind.’

‘I recognised you from the photo of you two.’

Jack laughed. ‘Mae was showing you our photos?’

‘No. She invited us in for a cuppa. Saw it on the side. She said you might pop round when you had a minute.’

‘Aw, yes. I’m so busy at the moment with my shop, but definitely put me down for a stall. I’ll take a library card too once the place is back on its feet.’

‘Allie will love you forever.’ Gabe waggled a cloth. ‘We’re going to move the library in here, so I’m just washing the walls if you fancy joining in.’

Jack glanced at his dark shorts and tee-shirt. ‘Oh, go on then, seeing how I’ve got an hour to spare.
